Root trim?

Good afternoon!

I began using hydroponics a few years ago when I stumbled across your website. Your site has been a good resource for me. I have purchased pots, pebbles, and plant/root food from you. I reached out with a question a year ago, and you got back to me so quickly. Thank you! You may recall I am a customer from Wheaton, IL. My question today is this…should I trim very long roots that have grown over the year? When I empty my pots before watering, I usually remove the plant and rinse the pebbles. I’ve noticed that many of my plants have super long roots. The plant does not appear to need a bigger pot. The plants look healthy, and I have not had any issues with growing them. However, some of the ends of the roots are black or just do not look healthy.

Thank you in advance for your expert advice.

Should I Trim Roots Growing Out of Culture Pot
by: Jeree

Roots growing out of the culture pot means you have a healthy plant! I'm glad you're not repotting them into bigger pots because they don't need it (I can say that without even seeing the plants!). Pruning those roots isn't necessary. They are accustomed to being submerged in water when you water and absorbing oxygen when the system dries out between waterings.
I prune them when they grow big enough to fill the bottom of the outer pot.

Trimming away the black root ends is a good idea.
A note on watering -I have a question about "emptying pots when you rewater".
I suggest waiting until the system is completely dry before rewatering. Plants with mature roots can go 3 weeks or more between waterings so have the courage to let the system dry out on its own.
Your plants are more durable than you think.
